Hebrew Unicode Characters

My main reason for compiling this table is the hope it might aid you in editing (such as in removing whatever you might consider non-essential characters from a Hebrew text using HTML Decimal Code) whatever online presentation you're creating which contains some Hebrew words.

Some fonts may not display all the vowel points and other characters correctly, so we'd recommend our users to download and install the free SBL Hebrew Font from the Society of Biblical Literature.

The tables below contain all the unicode characters relevant to the Old Testament Hebrew Text (and their HTML Decimal Codes) used on the pages of the BHS at academic-bible.org. I've also added a quotation of Genesis 1:1-19 based upon their online text of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia so you can see what it looks like in whatever fonts you have installed (will make use of Verdana, Arial or sans-serif if SBL Hebrew is not installed).

The decimal range of the Hebrew Block of the Unicode Consortium consists of &#1424 (U+0590) through &#1535 (U+5FF), but the first one (as well as various ranges listed below) is "Reserved"; and not used here.

The following is an excerpt from the Hebrew Masoretic Text of Genesis 1:1-19 as found in the BHS (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) version (based upon the online text at academic-bible.com; the highlighted phrases could be translated into English as “day one”, “day second”, “day third” and “day fourth”):

Genesis 1:1-19

1[Return to Table] When Pe is used after a Sof Pasuq punctuation mark (like this: ׃ פ), it indicates the end of a logical sectioin of text according to the Masoretes.
