   "Dynamic Disk" is the term that Microsoft® assigned to a new method for storing file-system partitions on an HDD. The standard historical layout is now referred to as a "Basic Disk" by Microsoft® in order to distinguish between the two.

   This page is intended to clear up some misconceptions that people have about sector-level details of Dynamic disks, since we've seen some magazine articles and comments about the structure of a Dynamic Disk that were made by people who didn't appear to really have first-hand knowledge about them! So, once again, we decided it was time to discover the facts using forensic methods rather than depending solely upon the available (and possibly incorrect) documentation.
